Introducing PowerClass: real cases, hands-on, made for your shift

Introducing PowerClass

Something new is coming to your Periop Concepts membership. It's called PowerClass, and it's built around how you actually learn on the job: real cases, hands-on practice, and something you can fit around a shift.

What is a PowerClass?

A PowerClass is about 40 minutes of high-impact, interactive, case-based learning for perioperative nurses. Each one takes the best of one of our live sessions, with the expert who taught it, and rebuilds it as something you do rather than something you watch.

You're not reading slides. You're in theatre, with a patient on the list and a day that depends on the calls you make.

How it works

  • Real cases. You follow patients through a shift, built from real theatre photos and the situations nurses tell us they meet.
  • Hands-on. Short interactive tasks put the skill in your hands: spot the hazard, find the fault, read the monitor, put the steps in order, and beat the clock when it matters.
  • Short segments. Each PowerClass is split into bite-sized segments of a few minutes each. Stop on a break and pick up where you left off.
  • Any device. Every PowerClass works on any device, whether that's your phone, a tablet or a computer, so you can learn wherever you have a few minutes.
  • A final case, your way. The last case study offers two paths: one for nurses newer to the specialty, and one for experienced nurses who want to troubleshoot, delegate and lead. Each path plays out differently.

What you get

  • 1 hour of CPD. A short assessment at the end; pass it and your CPD certificate arrives by email.
  • A summary to keep. A printable summary of the key points and the assessment answers, for your own revision or to share with your team.
  • Linked to the standards. Each PowerClass is clinically reviewed, follows current Australian guidance, and links to the relevant NSQHS Standards.
  • Included in your membership. PowerClasses are free for Periop Concepts members.

Why we built it

You told us you want learning that sticks. Watching a recording is a good start, but confidence comes from practising the decision before you have to make it for real. A PowerClass gives you a safe place to get it wrong, see why, and try again, so that on the day it counts, it's already familiar.

Throughout, the focus stays on the nurse's role in the team: recognising what's happening early, preparing, alerting the right person, and acting when asked.

First up: the anaesthetic machine

Our first PowerClass is the Anaesthetic Machine PowerClass with Dr Jack Madden, Anaesthetist and Clinical Educator. You're the anaesthetic nurse in Theatre 5, and the machine check fails at 07:45 with your first patient due at 08:15. Across the day you'll practise the machine checks and the two-bag test, finding a leak fast, reading pressure and flow waveforms, and handling gas supply and machine failures. There's something in it for everyone in theatre, scrub and scout included.

Keep an eye on your inbox: we'll let you know the moment it's live.

Tell us what's next

PowerClass is built from your feedback. If there's a topic you'd love to practise, or a live session you'd like to see rebuilt as a PowerClass, reply to our email and tell us.
