SYSTEMIC HAEMOSTATIC THERAPIES

In the surgical setting, systemic haemostatic therapies are used to support the body’s ability to control bleeding when local measures are not enough. For scrub and scout nurses, understanding these therapies helps anticipate escalation and support coordinated care.

Systemic therapies work by restoring or enhancing components of the clotting process throughout the body. This may include antifibrinolytics, which help preserve formed clots, or blood products such as plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate to replace depleted clotting factors. During critical bleeding, rapid blood loss, dilution, hypothermia, and acidosis can impair coagulation, making systemic support essential.

These therapies aim to stabilise clot formation and prevent ongoing blood loss.

🩸 Antifibrinolytics help protect existing clots from breakdown

🩸 Blood products replace lost clotting components

🩸 Therapy is guided by clinical assessment and bleeding severity

🩸 Early use supports better haemostatic control

🩸 Coordination with the multidisciplinary team is essential

Scrub and scout nurses contribute by recognising when bleeding escalates and supporting timely access to required resources. Clear communication and preparedness help reduce delays when systemic therapies are initiated.

In practice, systemic haemostatic therapies work alongside surgical techniques. Together, they help restore balance and support patient stability during critical bleeding events.
