Surgical Haemostasis Importance

SURGICAL HAEMOSTASIS IN THE SCRUB AND SCOUT ROLE

In the surgical environment, haemostasis is more than just “stopping bleeding.” It is a shared responsibility that directly shapes patient outcomes. For scrub and scout nurses, maintaining a clear field and anticipating bleeding risks is central to safe, efficient care.

Critical bleeding disrupts circulating volume, oxygen delivery, and clotting function. As blood loss continues, coagulopathy can develop, making bleeding harder to control and creating a cycle that is increasingly difficult to reverse. Early haemostasis is therefore essential to stabilise physiology and prevent deterioration.

Scrub and scout nurses play a key role in supporting timely haemorrhage control and activating appropriate responses when needed.

🔴 Early recognition of increasing blood loss supports faster intervention
🔴 Clear communication helps prompt activation of major haemorrhage protocols
🔴 Efficient instrument handling reduces surgical delay and ongoing bleeding
🔴 Awareness of blood product use supports coordinated team responses
🔴 Maintaining patient temperature helps preserve clotting function

Guidelines emphasise a multidisciplinary approach, where haemostasis, physiological optimisation, and blood product use are managed together. This highlights how intraoperative teamwork directly influences outcomes.

In practice, this means staying alert to subtle changes. A slightly heavier suction canister, slower clot formation, or rising urgency in the surgical field can all signal escalating risk.

Haemostasis is not just a surgical task. It is a team priority, and your vigilance helps keep the patient one step ahead of critical bleeding.
