PASSIVE TOPICAL HAEMOSTATS

In the surgical setting, passive topical haemostats are commonly used to support bleeding control when small vessels or diffuse oozing are present. For scrub and scout nurses, understanding how these products work helps with timely preparation and confident assistance.

Passive haemostats do not contain active clotting factors. Instead, they provide a physical matrix that supports the body’s natural haemostatic process. Materials such as collagen, cellulose, or gelatin create a scaffold where platelets can adhere and aggregate, helping to form a stable clot. Their effectiveness relies on an intact clotting system, making patient physiology an important consideration.

These agents are particularly useful when bleeding is low pressure and accessible.

🩸 Provide a scaffold to support natural clot formation

🩸 Rely on the patient’s own clotting mechanisms

🩸 Commonly used for capillary, venous, or surface bleeding

🩸 Available in forms such as sponges, sheets, or powders

🩸 Require correct placement and gentle handling for effectiveness

Scrub and scout nurses support their use by ensuring the correct product is opened, prepared, and passed efficiently. Awareness of application techniques, such as avoiding overpacking or disruption, helps maintain clot stability.

In practice, passive haemostats are an adjunct to surgical technique. Used well, they support control in situations where precision and patience are key.
