Crisis resource management in paediatrics

crisis resource management paediatric Apr 20, 2026

In the perianaesthesia space, paediatric crises can escalate quickly and often without much warning. The difference between a controlled response and a chaotic one is rarely just clinical knowledge. It is how the team thinks, communicates, and works together in those critical moments.

Crisis resource management, or CRM, focuses on these non-technical skills. It brings attention to human factors like leadership, communication, situational awareness, and decision-making. These elements underpin how safely and effectively a team responds under pressure. In paediatrics, where physiological reserve is limited and deterioration can be rapid, these skills become even more important.

CRM recognises that most adverse events are not simply due to lack of knowledge, but breakdowns in teamwork and communication. Structured approaches help teams stay organised, share information clearly, and anticipate what might come next. Simulation training has become a key way to build these skills, allowing teams to practise both common and rare crises in a safe environment.

🔹 Clear leadership supports calm, coordinated care
🔹 Closed-loop communication reduces missed information
🔹 Situational awareness helps anticipate deterioration
🔹 Resource utilisation ensures the right help arrives early
🔹 Role clarity prevents duplication and confusion

In practice, CRM means slowing things down just enough to think clearly. It may look like calling for help early, verbalising concerns, or assigning roles out loud. Small actions can create structure when things feel uncertain.

In paediatric perianaesthesia care, technical skill matters, but it is the team’s ability to function together that often shapes outcomes. Strong CRM turns a stressful moment into a manageable one.
