HAEMOSTATIC AGENTS CLASSIFICATION

In the surgical setting, topical haemostatic agents are often used to support bleeding control when conventional techniques are not enough. For scrub and scout nurses, understanding how these agents are classified helps guide timely preparation and safe use.

Haemostatic agents are broadly grouped by how they work. Mechanical agents provide a physical matrix that supports clot formation. Active agents contain biological components, such as thrombin, that directly enhance the clotting process. Flowable and combination products bring these properties together, allowing them to adapt to irregular or hard-to-reach bleeding sites.

Each type plays a specific role depending on the surgical context and bleeding pattern.

🩸 Mechanical agents create a scaffold for clot formation

🩸 Active agents accelerate the body’s clotting process

🩸 Flowable agents conform to uneven or deep surfaces

🩸 Combination products offer both structural and active support

🩸 Selection depends on bleeding severity and surgical site

Scrub and scout nurses support haemostasis by anticipating which agents may be required and ensuring correct preparation and availability. Familiarity with product handling is essential, as some require specific activation or application techniques.

In practice, these agents are an adjunct, not a replacement, for surgical technique. Understanding their role helps maintain control when bleeding becomes more complex.
