Emotional Intelligence in Perioperative Nursing
Perioperative nursing is an extremely emotionally intense specialty. Nurses are required to manage rapid clinical decisions in critical situations, while supporting patients and working within high pressure multidisciplinary teams 🏥. Emotional intelligence (EI) – the ability to recognise, understand, and manage your own emotions as well as those of others – is an essential skill that lends itself to safe, compassionate, and sustainable nursing care.
For perioperative nurses, EI enhances communication with anxious patients, promotes calm vibes in stressful operating theatre environments, and strengthens collaboration with the perioperative team. Self awareness and self regulation allow nurses to recognise stress triggers, maintain composure during emergencies, and avoid emotional overload that can impact clinical judgment and decision making ❤️.
Highly developed EI is linked with better teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership. In the perioperative space, where precision and timing are critical, emotionally intelligent communication can reduce errors and foster a culture of respect and shared decision making. Nurses who actively practice EI contribute to psychological safety within teams, where concerns can be raised without fear 🚫.
Some strategies for developing EI include:
- reflective practice
- debriefing after challenging cases
- mindfulness training 🌿
- seeking feedback from peers
Organisations can support staff by embedding EI training into professional development, providing mentoring programs, and ensuring structures that encourage respectful communication.
Ultimately, EI is not just a personal trait but a professional competency that improves both nurse wellbeing and patient care. For perioperative nurses, cultivating EI strengthens resilience, reduces burnout 😴, and builds stronger, safer surgical teams 🌟.
