ADVANCED TOPICAL HAEMOSTATS

In the surgical setting, advanced topical haemostats are used when bleeding is more complex or difficult to control with standard methods. For scrub and scout nurses, understanding these products supports timely responses when the surgical field becomes more demanding.

Advanced haemostats often combine mechanical support with active biological components. Many contain agents such as thrombin or fibrin that directly enhance the clotting cascade, helping to stabilise bleeding more rapidly. Some are designed as sealants, forming a barrier over tissue to prevent further blood loss while supporting healing.

These products are particularly useful in areas where precision is required or where bleeding is not easily controlled with conventional techniques.

🩸 Combine mechanical scaffolds with active clotting components

🩸 Enhance and accelerate the coagulation process

🩸 Can act as sealants to reinforce tissue surfaces

🩸 Useful in complex, diffuse, or hard-to-access bleeding

🩸 Require specific preparation and application techniques

Scrub and scout nurses play a key role in preparing these agents correctly and anticipating their use. Many require mixing, assembly, or precise timing, making familiarity essential to avoid delay.

In practice, advanced haemostats are valuable adjuncts to surgical technique. When used appropriately, they support efficient haemostasis and help maintain control in more challenging surgical situations.
